Questions people ask first
Should my oncology team know?
Yes. We ask your permission to send them a short note, and we encourage you to tell them you are coming. Acupuncture here sits alongside your oncology care.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel a brief pinch, a dull ache or nothing at all, and the needles are very thin. Tell us at any point and we adjust or stop.
Are the needles clean?
Yes. Each needle is sterile and single-use. We open it in front of you and put it in a sharps container afterward.
What if my blood counts are low?
Tell us. We may wait a few days, use fewer needles, or use ear seeds and acupressure instead. We may ask your oncology team first.
Do I have to stop my medicine?
No. Keep taking what your prescribers gave you, and tell them about everything you use, including your visits with us. Bring us a list of everything you take, with vitamins and supplements, so we know too.
How many visits should I plan for?
We make a plan with you for the next few visits and look at it again each time. It depends on your treatment calendar and how you feel. We do not sell packages.
Does insurance cover it?
We are out of network and do not bill health plans. We give you an itemized receipt to send to yours, and the plan decides. See how fees work.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for acupuncture. Ask your plan administrator before you book.
What should I wear and eat?
Loose clothes with sleeves and legs that roll up, and a light meal. You can stay in your clothes if you prefer.
What does acupuncture not do, and when should I see a doctor?
It does not replace your oncology care. For a fever, new bleeding, sudden swelling or shortness of breath, call your oncology team the same day. For chest pain or trouble breathing, call 911.
